Giulia Cenci 2019 Baloise Art Prize. Mudam Collection

Mudam Luxembourg

Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean will present recent works by Giulia Cenci (b. 1988, Cortona, Italy) acquired for the collection with the support of the Baloise Group. The display is the first institutional solo presentation by Cenci, winner of the Baloise Prize, 2019.

Four sculptures by Giulia Cenci will be presented in the autumn of 2020. Found objects or elements, such as fragments of an engine, tree branches or a cast taken from part of a wolf’s body are combined with various industrial materials such as metal, polyurethane resin, epoxy clay, foam, grease or dust from the artist’s workshop. Through an elaborate process raw materials, found objects and sculpted elements are transformed and merged together producing objects that amalgamate organic and mechanical forms. This series of hybrid sculptures is part of Territory, an installation composed of numerous individual works that unfurl chaotically and invade the space, evoking dynamic, animated entities.

The Baloise Art Prize is awarded annually at Art Basel to two artists exhibiting within the Statements section of the fair. Launched in 1999, it comprises CHF30,000 worth of prize money for each artist, as well as the acquisition of one or several works by the artists, which are donated to two partner museums. Thanks to this support, works by Beatrice Gibson, Mary Reid Kelley, Martha Atienza and Suki Seokyeong Kang have entered the collection of Mudam Luxembourg, who has been a partner museum since 2015. The jury for the 2019 Baloise Art prize was chaired by Martin Schwander, Fine Art Advisor of the Baloise and comprised Lionel Bovier, Director of MAMCO, Musée d’art moderne et contemporain, Geneva; Harald Falckenberg, Falckenberg Collection, Hamburg; Marie-Noëlle Farcy, Curator for the Mudam Collection; and Gabriele Knapstein, Director of Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart, Nationalgalerie - Staatliche Museen, Berlin.
