Taisia Korotkova
Diego San , 2022
Egg tempera on gesso on wooden panel. Unique artwork. Uncanny Valley series (2019–2022) Taisia Korotkova began this series in 2019 with a central question in mind: what is she actually painting - a portrait or a still life? This question echoes broader reflections on AI: what is it, how does it interact with humans, how do we perceive it, and is there true consciousness or just a “Chinese room”? All the characters depicted are based on real existing prototypes. Diego San, a robotic child, is the result of a joint project between the University of San Diego and the Japanese company Kokoro Co. Some of the figures in this series are shown half‑open, wrapped in cellophane. They appear like objects stored in a warehouse, yet the human features of their faces evoke a peculiar and unsettling sensation in the viewer, known as the uncanny valley.40 x 35 x 2 cm
