Galerie Zwart Huis was founded in 2001. In the early years the gallery was housed in Villa De Beir, a modernist doctor's house from 1924 in Knokke.
From the very beginning, the gallery has focused on Belgian contemporary art, with a affinity for figurative drawing and painting, but also featuring conceptual art, sculpture, ceramics, photography and design.
Since 2015 the gallery is run by Elke Helbig, who relocated the gallery from Knokke to Brussels in 2017.
Galerie Zwart Huis represents and collaborates with emerging talents as well as more established Belgian artists: Jan De Vliegher, Johan Tahon, Jan Vanriet, Christophe Coppens, Fik van Gestel, Robin Vermeersch and Colin Waeghe amongst others.
