Konschthal Esch

The Konschthal Esch is a contemporary art space that was created in 2021 as a prologue to Esch2022, European Capital of Culture. It is located in Esch-sur-Alzette southern Luxembourg, close to the French border. This new, internationally renowned institution is dedicated to the multitudinous forms of contemporary art. Alternating between monographic and thematic exhibitions, the Konschthal Esch is also a platform for creation and exchange, fostering dialogue with the latest in contemporary art with a special focus on immersive museum presentations and mediation programmes designed to promote the active involvement of the public. In addition to presenting internationally renowned artists, the Konschthal provides exhibition opportunities for emerging artists and today's artistic practices while focusing on the production of new works and documenting exhibitions by publishing catalogues. With a surface area of nearly de 2400m2 over 4 levels, this space is a far cry from a classic white cube: along with concrete slabs and metal beams, the raw weight-bearing elements and structures endow it with a uniquely distinct character.

Present on the international contemporary art scene since the early 1980’s, Clegg & use the conventions of 17th century Dutch portraiture to place them in a contemporary context. Clegg & Guttmann’s photographic portraits presented are rejected commissions. the subjects have commissioned a portrait from the artists, but are free to refuse the result. However, the artists retain the right to show and publish the work, which remains their property. This reverse tactic is also symbolic of the power issues in the particular category of portraiture.
