Anouk Kruithof - Universal Tongue

Moderne Galerie

With Universal Tongue, the Moderne Galerie of the Saarlandmuseum presents a key work by the Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof (b. 1981), which reveals the worldwide diversity of contemporary and traditional forms of dance. Starting from a large-scale online research project involving an international team, it produced an archive of more than 8,800 freely accessible dance videos, as well as a systematic record of over 1,000 dance styles. Kruithof translates this material into an eight-channel video installation, a pulsating collage that brings together different forms of cultural expression: ritual practices, pop-cultural trends and phenomena of the digital present stand side by side on equal terms. Universal Tonguethus offers a multilayered view of dance as a globally shared form of communication and body culture.
