Columns Series is inspired by the shabestan of the Jameh Mosque of Isfahan and the architectural rhythm surrounding the Taj al-Molk Dome, where monumental brick columns embody the permanence, authority and ideological power historically embedded in Iranian architecture.
In this installation, Atefeh reinterprets these historical forms through a process of dematerialisation and transformation. Instead of reconstructing the columns as solid structures, she translates them into transparent, suspended presences. The work consists of twenty-eight hanging columns, each approximately 300 cm high (flexible) and 50, 60 or 70 cm in diameter, painted in ink on delicate net fabric and suspended from the ceiling with nearly invisible threads.
By transforming heavy architectural forms into fragile, floating structures, the project questions the permanence of the ideological systems carried through architecture. In Iranian historical monuments, columns traditionally symbolise stability, hierarchy and spiritual authority. Here, however, they lose their structural function: they no longer carry weight, but appear unstable, vulnerable and close to disappearance.
This shift in materiality, from brick to net and from monumentality to transparency, reflects a broader meditation on the erosion of fixed narratives and inherited systems of power. Light and shadow continuously reshape the installation, producing an unstable architectural environment that changes with movement and perception.
Conceived for display windows and public visibility, the installation invites viewers to encounter architecture not as a permanent symbol of authority, but as an ephemeral space suspended between memory, fragility and transformation. Through this process, Columns Series becomes a meditation on how historical and ideological structures can dissolve, soften and open themselves to new interpretations.
