The Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Edward Steichen, the celebrated Luxembourg-born American photographer and curator. Established in 2004, this prestigious biennial award honors Steichen's multifaceted contributions to the art world, encompassing his groundbreaking work as a photographer, his influential role as a curator, and his unwavering commitment to championing the arts and nurturing emerging talent.

At its core, the award seeks to support and promote promising artists in the realm of contemporary arts. The prize, awarded every two years, offers recipients a transformative opportunity: a residency at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York City. This aspect of the award is profoundly significant, as it allows young practitioners to expand their artistic horizons by immersing themselves in the vibrant, diverse, and stimulating cultural milieu of New York – an environment that proved immensely fertile for Steichen's own artistic development.

By providing this platform, the Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg does more than simply commemorate a renowned artist; it actively continues Steichen's legacy of fostering artistic growth and innovation. Recipients of the award are granted the invaluable chance to engage with diverse artistic communities, access world-class cultural institutions, and develop their practice within an international context. This experience not only enriches the individual artists but also contributes to the broader ecosystem of contemporary art, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and pushing the boundaries of creative expression.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Edward Steichen Award, we invite the public to join us for a discussion on the importance and benefits of artist residencies, featuring past Edward Steichen Award recipients and national and international residency organisations. This event promises to offer valuable insights into the transformative power of residencies and their role in shaping contemporary art.

The Edward Steichen Award Luxembourg continues to pursue its mission thanks to an ongoing support of ministère de la Culture, ministère des Affaires Étrangères et Européennes, Œuvre Nationale de Secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte, Ville de Luxembourg, Centre national de l’audiovisuel (CNA), Mudam Luxembourg and the support and trust of the family of Edward Steichen. The award is placed under the high patronage of H.R.H. the Grand-Duchess of Luxembourg.
