Eric Mangen: A Place Where Questions Outnumber Answers

BIL | Galerie Indépendance

For the exhibition A Place Where Questions Outnumber Answers, Luxembourgish artist Eric Mangen presents a new body of work bringing together abstract painting, ceramics, and plant elements. Through these different media, Mangen creates an environment shaped by his sensitivity to landscape, material, and living forms. Forms meet and respond to one another according to their own logic, at times creating ambiguities that, as the exhibition title suggests, do not seek to provide answers, but rather to open up a space for questioning and interpretation.

The result of more than a year and a half of research, a new body of ceramic works extends the principles that characterize Mangen's painting practice. Here, the artist explores the same relationship to gesture, chance, and accident, confronting certain conventions of ceramic practice with a more intuitive working method. Irregularities, distortions, and unexpected outcomes thus become an integral part of the creative process.

Biography

Eric Mangen
, born 1983, is an abstract artist. He lives and works in Luxembourg. His artistic approach is based on the creation of backgrounds on which, like collages, he perpetually constructs and deconstructs, indulging himself to the synchronicities of “errors”. He principally works in large formats, as this space enables him to express himself with free movements. These movements are energetic and express a strength, a feeling that emerges from his inner. One could compare the conception of his works to a dance, that between pure intuition into his movements and logical construct, rhythms the composition of the painting. He works with diverse types of paint material and regularly experiments with surfaces, such as for example metal, wood, photographic transfer and fabric. His regular travels and art residency projects, such as, for example, in Australia and the USA, as well as his regular international collaboration with contemporary artists, contribute to his artistic inspirations and evolution.
