They are innocent. The same bags that appear on every construction site, every renovation, every building that is becoming something else. Tied at the top. Waiting for collection. Nobody questions what is inside them. That is the point — this kind of waste has learned to look like nothing.

Inside: luminaires that were designed, engineered, manufactured, shipped and in some cases installed — then removed, cleared, cancelled, or simply forgotten in a warehouse until someone decided the space was needed for something newer. Objects that did nothing wrong. Caught between decisions.

Lichtmüll is a growing light artwork in a vacant storefront in Luxembourg City. Each week new bags arrive on the bare concrete floor — collected from renovation sites, wrong orders, warehouse overstock, overproduction. The work grows without announcement, the way this problem grows: steadily, unremarkably, because the projects do not stop and the decisions do not change.

At night, some bags glow from within. No spotlight. No designed illumination. The only light in the room comes from what was thrown away — cold, uneven, pressing through the surface. Nearly one in three discarded luminaires still works at the moment of disposal. These ones prove it.

You stand outside. The glass is between you and the bags. The work does not lecture or assign blame. It knows responsibility is shared — across every desk, every signature, every compromise made somewhere along the chain between idea and landfill. It holds the evidence up to the street and asks you to stand with it. Long enough to feel the weight of what it took to make these objects. And the lightness with which we decided to discard them.

The installation has no fixed end date. It closes when the waste stops arriving.

It will not close soon.
