Shapes are everywhere: they connect nature, mathematics, and artistic creation. But how do they become a shared language between science and art?
In dialogue with the exhibition SHAPES – Beyond Geometry, on view at the Ratskeller since 15th of October, Cercle Cité, in collaboration with Luxembourg Art Week, invites artist Els Vermang and the exhibition co-curators, Anna Loporcaro and Hugo Parlier, to a conversation exploring the diverse scientific and artistic approaches to form.
Through a practice that brings together art, geometry, and digital technologies, Els Vermang investigates the structures and organisational principles that shape our perception of form. Her work reveals how complex systems can generate new visual and sensory configurations, encouraging audiences to take a fresh look at the relationships between nature, science, and artistic creation.
The discussion will offer complementary perspectives on the artist’s creative process, the art-work presented in SHAPES – Beyond Geometry, and the curatorial choices that have shaped an exhibition where art, mathematics, and science engage in a dialogue about the ways we perceive and represent the world.
Biographies
Els Vermang - Belgian artist and curator working between Brussels and Geneva, member of the artist collective LAb[au] since 2003, she has developed a practice at the intersection of art, geometry, and digital technologies. Her work explores the relationships between forms, visual languages, systems, and algorithmic processes, examining how rules and structures can generate new aesthetic experiences. She is also the director of the curatorial platform Société, dedicated to fostering dialogue between different generations and artistic practices.
Anna Loporcaro - Co-curator of the exhibition SHAPES – Beyond Geometry, Anna Loporcaro is an exhibition curator working at the intersection of cultural mediation and contemporary artistic practice. With more than 20 years of experience in the arts sector, she places audience engagement, knowledge sharing, and cultural democracy at the heart of her work.
Hugo Parlier - Professor of Mathematics at the University of Fribourg, specializing in geometry and topology, with a particular focus on hyperbolic surfaces, Teichmüller spaces, and knot theory. As co-curator of the exhibition SHAPES – Beyond Geometry, he has been developing public engagement projects at the intersection of mathematics and art for several years, notably in
collaboration with Bruno Téheux.
