Segnavento (Wheatervane) (2025) is a sculptural project by Oliviero Fiorenzi developed during an artist residency in Torri del Benaco (Lake Garda, Italy), promoted by Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia. The work emerges from a participatory process involving the local community, through which memories, childhood recollections, and visual symbols of Lake Garda were collected and translated into a shared iconography.
The installation takes the form of a contemporary (anti-)monument and kinetic wind marker shaped by the winds Ora and Pelér, making visible the cyclical rhythm of natural time. Three large wind vanes reassemble fragments of collective narratives, transforming individual recollections into a communal structure. Through workshops, participants translated childhood memories and personal recollections into drawings and symbols, later reworked by the artist into a unified visual language.
The sculpture operates as a device where memory, landscape and community intersect. Rooted in vernacular wind vanes, the project reactivates this typology as a contemporary tool for reading landscape and identity. Although developed within a specific territorial context, the project translates local narratives into a universal language of collective memory, highlighting Oliviero Fiorenzi’s participatory and research-based methodology.
