The Fox Who Lost His Mind
An old fox, once cunning and independent, has lived a long life full of adventure. But with time, his world begins to blur: he confuses the days of the week, can no longer find his way home, and forgets how to hunt. What once was prey becomes a source of help. His enemies turn into friends, into caregivers. The sculpture The Fox Who Lost His Mind is based on a true story from the Black Forest. With warmth and sensitivity, it speaks of aging, of loss – but also of care, belonging, and community. Strumbel intertwines this personal narrative with an artistic reflection on the notion of “Heimat.” The fox becomes a figure caught between memory and disorientation – between wilderness and shelter. Against the romanticized image of Heimat as a place of longing, or the ideologically charged projection surface of nationalists, Strumbel sets a multifaceted, open image: colorful, fragile, alive.
Stefan Strumbel, (b. 1979, Offenburg) is an artist whose work consistently explores the concept and construction of home. Without a classical academic background, he developed his own artistic language early on, which is characterised by a pointed examination of cultural symbols, collective memory and social narratives. Since the early 2000s, Strumbel has been developing sculptures, installations and paintings in which he deals with questions of identity, belonging and the understanding of tradition. In doing so, he deliberately focuses on the tension between the familiar and the alienated - and reveals the contradictions of a concept of home that is at once emotionally charged, politically contested and historically charged. His works have been shown in numerous institutional exhibitions, including major solo exhibitions in Germany and abroad. Stefan Strumbel lives and works in Offenburg
