For more than five decades, Tony Cragg’s sculptural practice has been centred on the relationship between form and material. Working with a wide range of materials and techniques, he explores how matter can be transformed into new and unexpected forms, moving between the organic and the constructed, the figurative and the abstract. For Cragg, sculpture is a way of questioning how we perceive the world, allowing material itself to reveal new possibilities, meanings and forms.
Mean Average (2018) is a monumental fiberglass sculpture rising to more than six metres in height. Composed of layered, organic forms arranged around a central axis, the sculpture rises in a continuous, almost spiral movement. Its changing contours reveal different profiles and associations as the viewer moves around it, making movement and shifting perception integral to the experience of the work.
