As one of the key works by the Dutch artist Anouk Kruithof (b. 1981), Universal Tongue highlights the diversity of contemporary and traditional forms of dance. Based on a large-scale online research project involving an international team, the work resulted in an archive of over 8,800 freely accessible dance videos, as well as a systematic catalogue of more than 1,000 dance styles. Kruithof translates these 250 hours of material into an eight-channel video installation which, as a vibrant collage, brings together diverse forms of cultural expression: ritual practices, pop-cultural trends and phenomena of the digital age coexist on an equal footing. Universal Tongue thus offers a multi-layered perspective on dance as a globally shared form of communication and physical culture.
