no/mad utopia
Johanne Allard
The Mother , 2025
Hand embroidered cotton thread on konnyaku paper in a white carved wooden box A woman balances a nest upon her head, moths fluttering from its depths, an image of fertility and duty. This work speaks to the exploitation of women’s bodies as vessels of faith and colonization, reflecting the histories of countless Catholic women in the “New World.” The flies suggest both the sanctification and the decay of motherhood within a system that demanded reproduction.35 x 26 x 7 cm
